Flag Fen - British Bronze Age Centre

This gallery of digital photographs was taken on a visit to Flag Fen Bronze Age Centre, near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, 6th March 2004.

Flag Fen is built on the site of a remarkable archaeological find. The timbers of prehistoric wooden structures (including a post alignment) dating to between 1300 BC and 955 BC, were discovered still preserved in peat soils during a reconnaisance survey of fenland drains. Many of the timbers and finds from the excavation are on show at the centre, including an area of in-situ timbers.

The Centre is also home to a number of Bronze Age reconstructions based on finds in the local area, including turf-roofed round houses, and a floating museum. I would recommend that you take the full tour, following the tour links on each page.

The Timbers of Seahenge (removed from the Holme Circle, Norfolk)

The removed timbers of the Holme Timber Circle better known as Seahenge, were in temporary storage at Flag Fen during our visit. The Holme Circle timbers consisted of an inverted tree stump acting as a central altar, surrounded by a close-set 55 timber post circle. The timbers were felled (dated by dendrochronology) in 2050 BC and 2049 BC. The circle would have been erected shortly after felling. The circle was found on mud flats at Holme-next-to-Sea in North Norfolk in 1999. The timbers were removed for 'safe-guarding' shortly after.
