John Brooker was apparently not born in Oxfordshire. The county boundary with Berkshire was only a few miles away, and it may be possible that John came from that county, where a number of Brooker families lived. Incidentally, the ancestors of Roy Brown lived very nearby. We have tried hard to locate the marriage of John to Elizabeth, but have so far failed.

John was born in Rotherfield Peppard, but later moved a few miles away to Shiplake, where he married Maryanne. They at first seem to have lived with Maryanne's father, Tom Edney, where their first three children were born. Sometime between 1851 and 1853, the family moved to the village of Harpsden, where Maryanne gave birth to a further seven children by 1870. Most documents record John's occupation as "agricultural labourer", but the baptism records for his daughter Emma reveals him more specifically, as a shepherd.

Henry Brooker.

Great Great Great Grandfather of Rosina, Georgina, and Edward Brooker.
Born 5th December 1863 at Harpsden, Oxfordshire.
Married Elizabeth Rosina Shawers at Fulham, London on 29th September 1883.
Known children - John Henry born 25/6/1884 Deptford, London and Elizabeth Rosina Brooker born c.1886 at Deptford.
Occupation - GENERAL LABOURER.

Henry was born on the 5th December 1863 at the village of Harpsden in Oxfordshire, not far from the towns of Reading and Henley. Like his father and grandfather, he at first became an agricultural labourer. However, he did not remain in Oxfordshire, but between 1881 and 1883 appears to have moved down river as did many others during the agricultural depression, into London. Henry married Elizabeth on the 29th September 1883 at St John's Church, Fulham. Their marriage certificate records their joint address as 49 Estcourt Road, Fulham. Henry was now employed as an industrial labourer.

On the 25th of June in the following year, Elizabeth gave birth to their son John Henry Brooker at 5 Copperas Square, Deptford, London. In 1891, the family was living at 3 North Street, Deptford, so that it appears that soon after marriage, the couple must have moved south of the river to Deptford. The 1891 census also tells us that young John now had a four year old sister named after her mother - Elizabeth Rosina Brooker.

Elizabeth Rosina Brooker (nee Shawers).

Great Great Great Grandmother of Rosina, Georgina, and Edward Brooker
Born - 11th September 1858 at Haggerstone, London.
Married - Henry Brooker at Fulham on 29th September 1883.
Known children - John Henry Brooker and Elizabeth Rosina Brooker.

Elizabeth was born on the 11th September 1858 at 29 Pownall Road, Haggerstone, Shoreditch, London. Her birth certificate records that she was the daughter of a journeyman Harrow weaver named Henry Shawers, and his wife Elizabeth Shawers (nee Durran). Her father must have been one of the cottage industry craftspeople that had been uprooted by the industrial revolution and the invention of mechanical looms.
