How To HTML! Lesson Seven

Your Design

In this short tutorial, you created pages of html, linked them together, embedded an image, used several tags, including paragraph, headings, line break, emphasise, strong, lists (ordered and unordered), and copied a style sheet. I hope that it taught you some good rules to follow in the future. But to develop your website further, you will need to develop your own plans, designs, and in particular, your skills and knowledge base. There is a site where you can learn much more now that you have the basics, find it at: www.w3schools.com.

Web Space

When you have finished your design, and feel ready to share it, then the next step is to upload a copy to a web server on the Internet. First of all, you must find a server! Here in the UK at present, most ISPs provide an allocated amount of webspace for their clients. This usually varies from around 5Mb to unlimited! space. If your ISP provides webspace, then check their home page, help files, and support for details on how to access it. Usually you will need an ftp address, a user name, and a password. You will also probably need an ftp (file transfer program) as well, to upload (copy to) your files to the server. However, there are a number of such programs, either shareware or freeware, that can be downloaded from the Net. I use Ftp Explorer, a freeware program available from www.ftpx.com, but Cute Ftp and W/S Ftp are very popular amongst webmasters.

If your ISP does not provide webspace, then you could settle either with a pay-to-use commercial web server, or with one of the free banner-sponsered web servers, such as Geocities or Angelfire (which provide their own ftp program at their end). However with the latter option, your visitors will be plagued by popup adverts! Here in the UK at least, the cheapest banner-free option is to sign up for a dialup account with an ISP that provides webspace. You only have to use it for a minimum, to maintain the account.
