The Ruins of Thetford Cluniac Priory

Thetford Cluniac Priory - The Ruins of St Marys.

The ruins of the church of St Marys that served the monastic community of Thetford Cluniac Priory, until the priory was dissolved by the agents of King Henry VIII during the 16th century. After the Dissolution, the priory fell into private hands. Much of its masonry was robbed - but examples of it can be seen in the older buildings across the town centre. For some centuries, it was used as the base for Abbey Farm.

The site now belongs to English Heritage who maintain the grounds. However, access is free of charge and always open to the public. Young people often congregate in the ruins on warm summer evenings. The ruins are near to the town centre.
