KILVERT'S DIARY and LANGLEY BURRELL

Langley Burrell is a small Wiltshire village, a few miles to the north of Chippenham, on the edge of the Cotswolds. Its church is dedicated to St Peter, and can be dated to c.1175. In 1822, a number of men from Langley Burrell, alongside others from surrounding villages, rioted in Chippenham, following a long standing feud between them and the town folk. Two men died, and thirty others were in injured in the riot.

Langley Burrell was for many years, the home of the Rev.Francis Robert Kilvert, whose diary of mid-victorian times has received world-wide acclaim, since it was first published in 1938. Francis Kilvert was born in 1840, the eldest son of the Rev.Robert Kilvert who was for many years the rector of Hardenhuish, and later of Langley Burrell. His mother was the cousin of Squire Ashe of Langley Burrell Hall. Although born and reared in the area, Francis spent several years living on the Welsh Borders, before returning to Langley to serve as his father's curate between 1872 and 1877.

Kilvert's Diary gives us an insight into life at Langley Burrell at a time when our ancestors - the Browns and Matthews, lived there. There are a number of references to the Browns and one to the Matthews in the 1960 3 volume edition of the diaries, as follow (my notes in brackets):

1873 (June) 'Saturday the longest day'
Near the Keepers cottage the setting sun made a green and golden splendour in the little green glade among the oaks while the Keeper and two other men walked like three angels in the gilded mist.

(From at least 1841 to 1881, the Keeper at Bird's Marsh was one of our Browns. In 1871, it was G.G.G Grandfather Jacob the elder).

1873 Tuesday Midsummer day
Walter Brown of the Marsh says that his grandfather old William Brown the keeper once saw some fairies in a hedge. But before he could get down out of the cart they were gone.

(Walter is Rosina, Georgina, and Edward's G.G.G Uncle baptised in 1862. William was their G.G.G.G Grandfather baptised 1779.

1874 Tuesday 28 April
In the afternoon I drove Mother to Jackson's to get Jacob Salmon's and John Matthews's signatures to an address to the Bishop to strengthen his hands in contending against the 'Counter-Reformation Movement'. Disquieting rumours of Romanist tendancies in the Church of England had entered and disturbed the calm even of the Happy Valley.

(John Matthews lived at Jacksom's Farm Cottage and is Rosina, Georgina, and Edward's G.G.G.G Grandfather).

1874 Monday 18 May
Went with Dora at 3 o'clock to a picnic in the Marsh. There were pesent the Vicar of Chippenham and Mrs Rich, Florence, Nettie and Gertrude Rich, George Awdry of Monkton, Agnes, Edith, Mabel, Evelyn, Beatrice and Julia Awdry of Seagry. Amelia Brown boiled our kettle. We played hide-and-seek in the wood and danced Sir Roger de Coverley under the oaks in the green glade near the keeper's lodge.

(Amelia Brown is the G.G.G Grandmother of Rosina, Georgina, and Edward).

1876 Thursday 2 March
Emma Halliday told me that just as she had finished laying out old Jacob Smith, the old man of three score and 18 years, she was sent for to usher into the world Anne Brown's new born child. 'Ah', said Old William, 'the old man wen in the morning and the child came in the evening to take his place.' 'Every moment dies a man, Every moment one is born.'.

(Anne Brown was the wife of Frederick Richmond Brown, and by marriage, G.G.G Aunt of Rosina, Georgina, and Edward.).

Jacob born - 1865 at Langley Burrell, Wiltshire.
Janetta born - 10th April 1866 at Ashtead Surrey.
