Robert (Hewitt?) Smith

Great Great Great Grandfather of Rosina, Georgina, and Edward Brooker.
Baptized at Attleborough on 12th January 1833.
Married - Ann Peach at Attleborough on 23rd October 1857.
Known children - Harry born c.1858, Frederick born 08/03/1860, Alice born 10/06/1862, Emma born 10/04/1864, Samuel born 13/12/1868, and Nellie Smith born c.1875.
Robert's Occupation - BRICKLAYER / BEERHOUSE KEEPER / PORK BUTCHER.

I have had some problems confirming Robert's origin. According to his grave headstone, he was born on the 15th December 1833. The Census records his place of birth as Attleborough. His marriage certificate states that his father was a labourer also named Robert Smith.

I checked the Attleborough baptism registers, and the only Robert, son of Robert Smith that I could find even near 1833 (or for some years following), was recorded as follows: 1833 January 12th. SMITH, Robert Hewitt, son of Robert Smith, Labourer, and Lydia. This baptism occurred nine months before his date of birth as recorded on his headstone. I wondered if his family miscalculated his birth by one year when they buried him?

I looked at all of the census returns from Attleborough 1871 to 1891. If we presume the actual day and month of birth recorded on the headstone to be correct, then these three censuses should show his age as: 37, 47, and 57. However, in actual fact, they show his age as: 37, 48, and 58. So there does seem to have been a confusion over the year of his birth.

His age as recorded on the 1881 and 1891 censuses, would suggest that he was born not in 1833, but on the 15th December 1832, a few months before the baptism of Robert 'Hewitt' Smith in Attleborough. I have surveyed the Attleborough censuses from 1841 to 1861, and have found no other candidates for our Robert. Further suggestions that our Robert, was the son of Robert and Lydia comes from the naming of his sons - Samuel and Frederick. Robert 'Hewitt' Smith had a half-brother named Samuel, and a step-brother named Frederick.

In conclusion, it appears that Robert was probably born on the 15th December 1832. He was baptised at Attleborough Church on the 12th January 1833. He learned the trade of bricklaying, and later married Ann Peach. By 1881, they were running a beerhouse called The Grapes. Robert also ran a building business from the backyard of the beerhouse, and a pork butchers business. Robert and Ann had six children.

Robert died in 1898. He left his building business to his son Harry, and the pork butchers to his daughter Nellie Potter. The Grapes is still standing today, but has been converted into a domestic house.

Ann Smith (nee Peach)

Born 27th July 1835 at Eaton, Lincolnshire.
Married - Robert Smith at Attleborough, Norfolk on 23rd October 1857.

Died - 9th March 1913.

Ann was born illegitimate in Lincolnshire in 1835. In 1851, she was living in Attleborough in the same household as a Sarah Peach, age 41. Both were employed in the house as domestic servants. I wonder, was Sarah an aunt, or even Ann's mother? Sarah was born near to Attleborough, at Hockham. Did she move to Lincolnshire for work, and come back with a daughter? In 1857, Ann married Robert Smith. They had at least six children. Ann lived to the age of 78 years.
