James was born circa 1817, possibly in Geldeston, Norfolk. Mary was the daughter of Edward and Ann Tammas, and was baptised on 7th July 1816 at Langley also in Norfolk. During the 1841 Census, James was living in Chedgrave with Mary and her mother. Mary's father, Edward, had died the previous year. Also in the household was Mary's brother James Tammas, and her two illegitimate children: George age two, and an infant named Ann. James was listed as a labourer. As for the father of Mary's children, this was almost certainly James, as the children were baptised: George Tovell TAMMAS and Anne Tovell TAMMAS. James married Mary on 28th December 1841 at Chedgrave church.
Mary gave birth to a further five children after their marriage, all, I believe, at Langley.
At some point, the family moved several miles away, to the village of Tunstall, north of the river. Mary lived to the age of 64, and James to 84. They were buried at Halvergate Church (Halvergate is next to Tunstall).

George was baptised at Chedgrave, Norfolk, the illegitimate son of Mary Ann Tammas on the 1st November 1838. His father was James Tovell, who later married George's mother. The family then disappear off record for several years, and then reappear as living in the villages of Halvergate and Tunstall.
Eliza was born at Tunstall in 1849, the daughter of old William Lawn - the parish clerk.
George's sister Ann was married at Tunstall on 21st February 1864. She used the name Ann Tammas, and recorded illegitimate under the entry of 'Father's Name'.
George and Eliza were married at Tunstall Church on 4th February 1866. George was then a 26 year old farm worker, and called himself George Tammas, claiming that his father was a 'James Tammas'.
George and Eliza had at least eight children born between 1868 and 1887, mainly at Tunstall. On most of the baptism entries, they used the surname Tammas, however, these entries have a postscript beside them stating: changed to TOVELL. They were listed in the 1861 Census as living in Tunstall, next door to Eliza's parents. They were then using the surname: Tovil.
Why did George change his name from Tammas to Tovell in mid-life? and why did he claim that his father was a James Tammas at his wedding? Was it genuine confusion caused by family secrets, or was the truth forced out by officialdom? But it didnt end there! In 1888, at the wedding of his daughter, he was again calling himself George Tammis. They reappear, this time as Tovell in the 1891 Census, when they were now living at Lower Farm Road, Tunstall. He carried on the confusion into old age, when in 1898, at the wedding of his daughter Emma, he calls himself George Tammis. He was at that time working as a gardener.
George died in 1917, and was followed into the grave at Halvergate by Eliza in 1941. Their headstone names them: George Tammas and his wife Eliza Tammas-Tovell.
