Our Family History

John and Ann Thacker (nee Hewitt)

G.G.G.G.G.G Grandparents of Rosina, Georgina, and Edward Brooker.
Married: 26th April 1791 at Salehouse (now Salhouse), Norfolk.
Known children: Thomas born 23/05/1793, William born 05/03/1796, and Mary Thacker born 09/05/1801 - all at Salhouse, Norfolk.
Source: Salhouse parish registers, Rackheath parish registers.

I strongly suspect that our John Thacker was the son of the John Thacker of Sprowston, and Mary Thacker (nee Gunton), who married at Rackheath on 26th July 1763, but as of yet, cannot confirm this relationship.

The earliest definite record that I have so far found of our John, was of his first marriage to Mary Clarke on 2nd February 1787 by license at Rackheath. I have not yet found any children by John's first marriage, and three years after the wedding, Mary died at the age of 25. She was buried at Salehouse on 23rd April 1790.

John Thacker, now a widower, married our ancestor, Ann Hewitt, spinster at Salehouse church on 26th April 1791.

William and Catharine Thacker (nee Hagon)

G.G.G.G.G Grandparents of Rosina, Georgina, and Edward Brooker.
William born: 5th March 1796 at Salehouse.
Married: 19th May 1819 at Rackheath, Norfolk.
Known children: William Thacker bap 09/07/1820, and Susan Thacker born c1823 Salhouse.
Catharine buried: 6th December 1832 at Rackheath.
William's occupation: AGRICULTURAL LABOURER: husbandman.

William, husbandman and labourer, married Catharine Hagon at Rackheath on the 19th May 1819. Their first child was William in 1820, followed later by a daughter that they named Susan. Catharine died young, in 1832, leaving William a widower, just as happened to his father. In December 1833, William married Maria Cliborne at Rackheath. Maria gave him at least three more children - George, baptised 1834, John, baptised 1837, and Ann Thacker born circa 1841. They were living in Rackheath during the 1851 Census.

Susan Thacker

Great Great Great Great Grandmother of Rosina, Georgina, and Edward Brooker.
Born: c1823 at Salhouse, Norfolk.
Baptised: 23rd May 1823.
Known children: George Thacker (illegitimate), bap 10/04/1847 Rackheath.

I found the following in a Bishop's Transcript: Baptised George Thacker, illegitimate son of Susan Thacker. 10th April 1847. The only other reference of Susan is in the 1851 Census, when she was living with her father and stepmother at Rackheath. George was also living with them, aged four.

Susan was not living with the family in the 1861 census. Perhaps she was now married or in service. George however, was still with his Grandfather.

George and Sarah Anne Elizabeth Thacker (nee ?)

Great Great Great Grandparents of Rosina, Georgina, and Edward Brooker.
George born: c1847 at Rackheath, Norfolk.
Sarah born: c1844 at Bestthorpe, Norfolk.
Known children: George bap 26/03/1871, Ellen born c1874, William born c1876, Caroline Druesilla born c1878, Catharine born c1880, Thomas born c1883, Rubin born c1885, Walter born c1887, Herbert born c1891, and Rose Thacker. All were born at Rackheath, Norfolk.
George's occupation: AGRICULTURAL LABOURER.

As far as I know, George spent most of his life living at Rackheath, Norfolk. He was illegitimate, and probably raised by his grandfather, and step-grandmother.He was working on farms by 1861, when he was 14 years old. Sometime in the following ten years, he married Sarah. They had about nine children, all born at Rackheath. In 1881, they were living on Green Farm Lane. In 1891, they were living on Barrack Row.

One story that has been passed down is the following: When their children were young, in order to keep them out of mischief while she went shopping, Sarah would tie their ankles to the kitchen table with cotton. She would then walk to Norwich to do her shopping. When she returned, any child with broken cotton would be punished. Sarah was remembered as 'Granny Thacker by name, Thacker by nature!'.

This is believed to be Sarah Thacker, born 1844
