Thetford Town Centre - Bridge Street

Although Thetford was an important early English town during the early 11th century, for centuries its growth stagnated, and it became a small insignificant town on the road to Norwich. During the 1960s and early 1970s, the population of Thetford boomed when the Town Development Act, commonly known as Overspill, brought thousands of people from overcrowded London. This rapid 1960s growth caused lots of damage to the rural character and heritage of the town centre, as old buildings were pulled down for new. However, as can be seen in this photo - not all of that character has been lost.

Looking up to the crossroads from Bridge Street. The Bell hotel can be seen on the right, St Peters Church in front.
