For at least three generations, the Larke Family were living in the village of Cantley in Norfolk. Previous to this, they may have been connected to a family of Larkes who lived nearby in Burlingham, back to at least 1609.

William married twice. His first marriage was to a Mary Wright on the 7th July 1730. From his first marriage, William fathered a further five children - Mary bap 18/01/1731, William bap 28/05/1734, Sarah bap 30/11/1740, Anne bap 06/06/1742, and John Larke bap 05/02/1744 at Cantley. A year later, William married Mary Smith - our ancestor.

Although William was the Clerk of Cantley Parish, he probably had other work. For example, William Lawn (another of our ancestors) was Parish Clerk to Tunstall, Norfolk, but worked as an agricultural labourer.

Samuel appears to have lived out his life with Eliabeth at Hassingham, a small village near to Cantley. They may have had other children. Samuel was a husbandman - a small farmer. He died at the age of 64 as a result of Concussion of the brain. Was this perhaps due to an accident at work? His son-in-law William Curtis, was present at the death. Elizabeth died in the local workhouse, as did many of the elderly during those hard times.
