Proximal End or Striking Butt of Flint Flake

This photo of a flint flake, sticking out of the sands of a forestry compartment, clearly shows the remainder of a prepared core striking platform that lay behind the point of percussion or impact. This flake was removed from a prepared core that was knapped in order to create flakes – rather than being a waste flake from the production of a core tool such as an axehead. The waste core that the flakes left behind would have had at least one flat striking platform, and the last layer of flakes removed from it would have left a crown around the edge of the platform.
