Flint Flakes Tour

Example of a Survey Site

This is a typical example of a survey search area. This example, near Santon, Norfolk, is on river valley slopes and has not been destumped. It is quite mature, having been restocked the previous winter. Vegetation has not yet blocked visibility. The surface-collection project involves walking a sample of these trenches/furrows, in transects spaced apart at a default of 40-metre spacing. Each transect is divided into 20-metre-long stints.

Please do not remove artefacts without permission, and please stay on the path in the forest. The restocked compartments of Thetford Forest are home to much of the UK woodlark population during the nesting season. Not only are nesting ground birds and young trees at risk from disturbance, but there is also the danger of Lyme disease and adder bites.
