small neolithic flint axe head

Small finds - Neolithic Axehead

Recovered during forest-walk 37 in 2000. Its a strange flint tool - clearly a small flint axe head, at first I thought that I had found my first mesolithic tranchét axe, but on further inspection, it looks like an informal axe dating to the neolithic period. Perhaps the abundance of good quality flint in this area encouraged lazy knapping of informal and disposable tools? Forest-walk 37 took place in Santon Warren, now in Lynford, Norfolk.
