Reconstructing Roman pottery

Small Finds - Drawing Reconstructed Roman pottery

What I have done here is show how a sherd of pottery can sometimes give us an impression of what the pot was like. This is especially the case with a reasonable rim or base sherd. You can get an idea of the diameter of the rim/base, by holding it over a home-made chart of circle sizes. Then you can sometimes rock it to get a measurement of its angle.

From these measurements, you can bring the pots a little bit back to life with drawings like those above - from sherds of Roman pottery from site 32349 at Thetford for example. Do-it-yourself archaeology, I like it!
