Travellers Hill – Round Barrow, King's Forest, Suffolk
Travellers Hill (Wordwell, Suffolk) is another round barrow located within the wider survey area – in this instance, situated deep within King's Forest at OS grid ref. TL842745. Many of these prehistoric round barrows are explicitly marked on Ordnance Survey maps, particularly older Pathfinder series sheets, by the traditional antiquarian term tumulus.
Barrows are frequently positioned on natural liminal zones or ancient borders outside core settlement areas, and surface finds of domestic material are generally uncommon directly around them. Highlighting their persistent visual significance across millennia, these distinctive mounds were often later incorporated into medieval boundary markers for both parishes and hundreds.
