Round Barrow earthwork - Icklingham, Kings Forest
Unfortunately, I don't presently have a name for this one, but rest assured that it will be something Hill. It is situated at British National Grid (OS) ref. TL 7872 7322, straddling the boundary line between Kings Forest, and adjacent arable farmland. It is a 35 minute walk from the West Stow Country Park car park. The barrow is quite worn - by centuries of weather, and no doubt plough action. I think that this photo emphasises the point I keep making, that barrows have often been used as boundary markers in later ages.. Even in their own age, I suspect that they laid well outside of settlement areas - on ridges, and high up where they could be seen for a distance.
