AbbeyHeath Lake

Abbey Heath Lake or Kingfisher Lake, Thetford Norfolk

This fishing lake or pond is a very recent creation. It was dug out for gravel extraction, used to build the neighbouring Thetford A11 bypass road, during the late 20th century. Fishing rights have since been leased out to local angling clubs. The first club to use it, reserved the new water for youth members, and named it the Kingfisher Lake. Later, it passed into the hands of another local fishing club, and was stocked out as a carp lake. It is now more usually named as Abbeyheath Lake. I captured this photo a few years ago during a snowy winter day.

It is not only home to a number of good sized carp - but is a haven to local wild-life. Waterfowl favour it during the winter, and large numbers of toads heavily spawn it every spring.
