Elveden War Memorial

War Memorial, Elveden, Suffolk

This is what visitors usually see when they arrive into Thetford Forest from the busy A11 road that leads to Thetford. Visitors often enquire what is it? Well, it is an enormous memorial to the war dead from three surrounding villages - Elveden, Eriswell, and Icklingham - in honour of the servicemen from these West Suffolk villages who fell in the Great War 1914-1918.

Parallel running ditches stripe the adjacent heath - these are anti-glider earthworks dating from World War Two. At the bottom of the hill on a bend - crowned by a pine tree, is a wonderful bronze age round barrow - right next to the A11.
