View of Mildenhall Warren Lodge

Warreners' lodges were fortified medieval buildings that sat high up within a warren landscape. They housed the warrener and his family, who cared for the coneys and other game, while actively protecting their lord's highly lucrative warren from poachers.

The warrener's lodge at Mildenhall is less well known than the famous example at Thetford. However, crucial conservation work has saved this medieval building just as it was about to crumble away entirely. Thanks to recent forest clearance, the ruin can now be viewed as it was originally designed to be – standing high up, prominently overlooking the open warren.
