Late Prehistoric Round Barrow
Pepper Hill actually lies just outside Thetford Forest (just across the road), about 2 kilometres north of Brandon and west of the A1065 road (OS grid ref. TL787882). Local legend has it that Cromwell positioned his cannon on top of the mound to pepper Weeting Castle – quite some distance away!
It is actually a late prehistoric round barrow – the original resting place of an individual, either cremated or buried, but quite possibly also the site of later satellite cremations or inhumations. It likely dates from the end of the Neolithic through to the Bronze Age, or perhaps even later.
