12th century ginger jar ware

Small finds - 11th or 12th century potsherds from Brandon, Thetford Forest

The above pot fragments were recovered at a site in Thetford Forest at Brandon. A small area was literally packed with these fragments and sherds - almost all of the same pottery - an unusual ceramic that has been identified as 11th or 12th century 'ginger jar' ware - not named for its contents, but for its gingery colour. I cannot help but feel that I have stumbled over a kiln site. Either that, or?

The fragments were sharp and unabraded - clearly the site has not been ploughed over - some of the fragments were large as can be seen above. More on them in the Archaeo-Blog, and on the Medieval Site pages.
